When It Is and When It Isn’t

We live in both a world of infinite multiplicities and binary.

Imagine a gradient going from black to white. There are infinite shades. Yet, if I were to point out a dot, it would be defined. It wouldn’t be like the dot to the left of it or the right of it.

I think of this when I remember that while my life is composed of infinite moments, there are ones that are marked out as a defining moment.

In particular, I remember the moment I woke up for the first time. I do mean a spiritual awakening. I saw for the first time–though not intellectually, not out loud, not fleshed out fully as a conscious thought–that I and only I am in charge of my experience of life.

True, after that moment, there have been times where I’ve snoozed again and forgotten about my responsibility and my power. And in my sleep, acted poorly again in a way that didn’t benefit me or others. But then I’d have another defining moment and wake again. The difference is that I had already had a very first moment; so the second time, it was a familiar feeling and, even if not by much, I was able to lock into my self-responsibility more quickly.

It’s my life’s dedication that I am a space that in which others can find their defining moment of awakening. I make myself a laboratory for others to discover the light switch that only they can turn on.

A light can either be on or off. That is the binary that is just simply and unemotionally true. How we choose to act once we are light: that is an endless spectrum of hues and expressions I love to see.

Here’s your light, please turn it on: only you are responsible for your experience in life no matter what happens around or to you and no matter who does what. It’s either on or it’s not. Once it’s on, please remember to keep turning it back on and in the light, practice practice practice.
